History of Container Cranes:

During the early 1950s loading & unloading goods from ship-to-shore was slow and labor-intensive. It was the standardization of the shipping container in 1956 that led to serious innovation for container cranes. Modern ship-to-shore container cranes are designed to automate the handling of 20’, 40’ and 45’ containers. This standardization and automation made the movement of goods extremely efficient with great impact on the global supply chain.

Today, port crane manufacturers are selling their products for up to $40 million. Types of container cranes on the market include: Ship-to-Shore Gantry Cranes, Quayside Container Cranes, MQ Portal Crane,  Rubber Tyred Container Gantry Cranes, Marine Deck Cranes, and Derrick Cranes. It makes great financial sense to protect these big ticket machines of steel with routine exterior painting.

How To Paint a Ship-To-Shore Crane Safely?

Container cranes can reach up to 45 meters high. Many have difficult access points. Conventional means for access, such as scaffolding or ladders, are out of the question for container crane painting.

Painting container cranes require skilled climbers that know how to navigate an obtruding like structure using ropes. Industrial rope access is a method used by the oil exploration industry to work on offshore oil rigs. It has continuously demonstrated the highest safety standards for working at height. Trained technicians are required to log hours and pass tests to become certified. Industrial rope access is used all over the world and is an effective and safe method to paint port cranes.

Benefits of Port Crane Painting:

Corrosion Protection:

Port cranes are constantly exposed to harsh marine environments, including saltwater and strong UV rays. Over time, this exposure can lead to corrosion, jeopardizing the structural integrity of the crane. Routine painting with high-quality paint provides a protective barrier against corrosive elements, significantly extending the crane’s lifespan.

Safety Enhancement:

Port cranes are essential for handling heavy loads and ensuring efficient port operations. A well-maintained and professionally painted crane reduces the risk of accidents. Clear visibility of painted markings and colors enhances safety, helping crane operators execute precise movements and avoid hazards.

Improved Performance:

Painting port cranes isn’t just about aesthetics and durability; it can also impact performance. Smooth and well-maintained surfaces reduce friction, enabling smoother operations and potentially increasing productivity.

Compliance with Regulations:

Many maritime and port authorities have strict regulations regarding crane maintenance and safety standards. Routine painting and maintenance helps ensure that port cranes remain compliant with these regulations, avoiding potential penalties and downtime.

Asset Value Preservation:

Port cranes are huge investments for port operators and shipping companies. Proper maintenance and painting protects this valuable asset, preserving its value and potentially reducing the need for expensive repairs or premature replacement parts.
