What is a Roof Truss?:
A roof truss is most often a prefabricated structure built to support a roof on a building. Since the roof is the first line of defense of a building, the roof truss needs to be structurally sound. The use of triangular units provides strength for the roof truss.
Roof Truss Materials We Paint:
A roof truss is made of steel, timber, or a combination of the two.
Steel Roof Trusses:
Common in commercial and industrial construction, steel roof trusses have a high strength-to-weight ratio. Their superior spanning capacities make them great for large construction projects like sports stadiums, warehouses, and airplane hangars.
Since steel is vulnerable to corrosion, constant exposure to moisture threatens the lifespan of steel roof trusses. Painting roof trusses with a fire-retardant coating is a proven solution to increasing their lifespan. Steel has the condition of high ductility, making it easy to see deformities, providing red flags to when painting is needed for protection.
Timber Roof Trusses:
Since Ancient Rome, timber roof trusses have been used in construction. They are still used today and most frequently found in construction of residential homes. People love their natural beauty and open concept design ceilings. The major weakness of having timber roof trusses is they are susceptible to pests and prone to humidity.
To preserve the natural beauty of pine, fir, or cedar wooden roof truss, a common solution is to coat with glazings or colorless varnishes.
Common Types of Roof Trusses:
The components of a roof truss include an exterior frame or chords and interior beams or webs. These components are also commonly called rafters, joists, and purlins. These interlocking components come together to form triangular units with varying designs. The most popular roof truss designs are as follows:
King Post Truss:
The most common truss design for short span applications. A vertical web beam at the center takes the greatest amount of pressure. A rod made of wrought iron is commonly used even if the King Post Truss is made of wood.
Queen Post Truss:
For greater spanning applications, two vertical web beams are used instead of the single beam for which the king-post gets its name.
Fink Truss:
The preferred design for long-span applications is the Fink Truss. Diagonal web beams come together to form a W shaped design. It was originally designed to support bridges.
Scissor Truss:
A structurally inefficient design that is quite popular with patrons due to its aesthetics. The web beams come together at a joint where the bottom chords meet resembling a scissor hinge.
Hammer Beam Truss:
An arch-braced truss, allowing greater spaces to be spanned. Westminster Hall in England is a popular example of a hammer beam truss design. It doesn’t have a bottom chord.
Challenges of Painting Roof Trusses:
Painting roof trusses is easy but accessing them can be very challenging. Especially if man lifts are not permitted inside the property and ladders don’t reach. Most commercial painters are not equipped with the capabilities to work at height. The only safe method to paint roof trusses is via rope access.
Industrial Rope Access for Painting Roof Trusses:
Industrial Rope Access is a non-motorized work positioning system that is used across the world and perfected by the oil exploration industry. Strict protocols and equipment are regulated by governing bodies. Industrial rope access practitioners are certified by IRATA or SPRAT.
The RayAccess team uses industrial rope access techniques for painting roof trusses no matter the height. If you have a roof truss painting project, our crew is up for the task. We have level 3 certified industrial rope access technicians.
The Professional Way to Paint Roof Trusses:
Millions of dollars are wasted every year on painting systems that prematurely fail because amateur painters rush a painting job. The professional way to paint roof trusses requires a 3-step process: pre-paint inspection, surface preparation, and painting.
Pre-paint Inspection:
A complete inspection of the substrate is required before each roof truss painting job. An adhesion test is performed to select the appropriate paint system. Our team uses rope access and drone technology for access and visual inspections of roof trusses.
Surface Preparation:
Many amateur painting contractors fail to perform the important step of surface preparation. A thorough cleaning and removal of grease, dust, and loose contaminants should be completed before any paint is applied. In addition, it’s important to fill any holes in structural joints with a caulking application. All cracks and dents should be repaired and patched up. Lastly, surfaces that won’t be painted should be protected and masked from accidental paint dripping or overspray.
Painting:
The last and final step of painting roof trusses is the most exciting! Paint is applied which may require several coats such as a primer, intermediate, and finishing coats. Based on the recommended painting system, you can look forward to many years of protection and beauty after painting roof trusses.
