The Causes of Stucco Cracks:

Surface deformation is the process by which substrates expand and contract with changes in temperature. Stucco expansion joints help reduce this tension as long as joints have sufficient caulk. Besides changes in the weather, seismic activity from earthquakes can also cause surface deformation.

UV rays present another problem by breaking down the stucco. A telltale sign is faded color. Exterior painting will protect the stucco from UV rays by providing a protective coating. 

Stucco is a porous material that naturally absorbs water. Stucco takes a few days to dry out after a rainstorm. If the stucco remains wet and waterlogged after a week, water has gotten behind the stucco. After some time, water behind the stucco will cause deterioration and cracks in the stucco.
